Tuberculosis is one of the major causes of deaths in the developing “third world” countries, causing the death of approximately two million people every year. Recently there has been much attention to the lipoarabinomannan (LAM) cell wall of the causative parasite, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. LAM is the seat of organism's baffling drug resistant capability, and so has long been the focus of intense biological scrutiny. The paper will discuss the development of methods for the total synthesis of lipomannan (LM) oligosaccharides by utilizing regioselective mannosylation techniques.
