Ionic liquids, have shown great promise as environmentally benign reaction media because they exhibit negligible vapor pressure as well as excellent chemical and thermal stabilities. They also provide good solubility for a wide range of organic as well as inorganic compounds, and are compatible with transition-metal catalysts which simplifies catalyst recycling. In a continuation of our study of reactions involving organoboron reagents in nonconventional solvents, we developed several reactions utilizing ionic liquids as reaction media [Tetrahedron Lett. 2003, 44, 4673]. New reactions include direct coupling of aryl- and vinylboronic acids with allylic alcohols and boronic acid based Mannich reactions. These new syntheses and related reactions will be the topics of discussion
