Copper amido and nitrene complexes have been implicated in a range of stoichiometric and catalytic processes. The synthesis and reactivity of three-coordinate copper complexes will be discussed, including copper(I) amido complexes. The reactivity and structures of these complexes have been examined and compared with related compounds. It has been found that copper(I) amido complexes are highly reactive and nucleophilic. Current work extends this structural motif to new ancillary and amido ligands and the nature and reactivity of the Cu-N bond in the new complexes will be presented. In addition, results from efforts to access well-defined copper(III) nitrene complexes will be discussed.
