Synthesis and Studies of Ru-Rh Complexes Designed as Photochemical Molecular Devices

Karen J. Brewer and Mark C. Elvington. Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA

A supramolecular complex of the form LA-BL-Rh(III)-BL-LA (LA = Ru(II) polypyridine light absorber; BL = 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine bridging ligand) has been designed as a photochemical molecular device. This complex possesses a lowest lying Ru(II) ® Rh(III) charge transfer state allowing for photoinitiated electron transfer to the central rhodium. This process can be repeated to lead to photoinitiated electron collection. Studies probing the multielectron transfer processes and the photochemical reactivity will be presented. This work is supported by the ACS-PRF. For more information contact kbrewer@vt.edu.
