Many well-known bulk materials have nanoscale counterparts, the properties of which are attracting increasing attention because of their tunable functionality. Using both vanadate nanotubes and tungsten disulfide nanoparticles as examples, we discuss the effect of local curvature on the dynamics of these materials.
