Structure-property relationships in ionic liquids: An electrostatic approach

Mark N. Kobrak, Brooklyn College -- CUNY, Brooklyn, NY

Many properties of molecular liquids can be understood by consideration of the electrostatic dipole moment of the molecule. However, the dipole moment of an ion is not a well-defined quantity, and cannot be applied to ionic liquids. We develop an alternative framework for translating the electrostatic properties of ions into the macroscopic properties of an ionic liquid, and show how it can be used to interpret experiments and tailor ionic liquid properties.
