After nearly thirty years of teaching at the high school, Advanced Placement and junior college level, the presenter has amassed a number of demonstrations and laboratory experiments which he has found to be particularly effective in teaching general chemistry. Techniques include ‘side-by-side' demonstrations (apparently similar reactions which yield significantly different results), open-ended experiments designed to foster creativity and problem solving, and some especially effective laboratory experiments. Two of these have appeared in The Journal of Chemical Education. Chemical topics addressed include acid/base chemistry, stoichiometry, solution chemistry, and qualitative analysis. Introduction, presentation, expectations, and advantages of the experiments and demonstrations will be included.
The presenter was the 1999 Great Lakes Regional Teacher of the Year.
