Brønsted Acid Catalyzed Reactions of Salicylaldehydes to Benzo[b]furan-3-Ethyl Ester Derivatives

Matthew E. Dudley and M. Mahmun Hossain. University of Wisconsin -- Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI

A convenient, high yielding procedure for converting relatively inexpensive salicylaldehydes to benzofuran-3-ethyl esters will be described. The procedure involves one pot and requires only two steps. In addition, the reactions proceed through an interesting racemic hemiacetal intermediate, which has been characterized by NMR spectroscopy.
