Synthesis of thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine oligomers as potential routes to metallated polythiophene derivatives

Li Wen and Seth C. Rasmussen. North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND

Metal chelation of a conjugated polymeric backbone allows the production of metalated polymers able to combine the electro- and photo- chemical properties of transition metal complexes with the electronic and optical properties of the organic polymer. With the goal of making a new series of such hybrid polymers, thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine-based oligomers were synthesized via Stille couplings as potential polymerizable ligands. The synthesis of the thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine oligomers will be presented along with their electronic and optical characterization. Evaluation of the oligomers' potential metal binding ability will also be discussed.
