Chemistry Connections to Teen Choices

Susan A. S. Hershberger and A. M. Sarquis. Miami University, Oxford, OH

Fiji or tap water? Tanning session or nap? Scrutinize your face or wash your hands? Ionic or covalent? Acidic or basic?! With all the choices students have, is it surprising students are sometimes confused by chemistry? Chemistry can inform the personal environmental health choices students make everyday. As students experiment with drinking water, water filters, sunscreens, skin bleaching agents, carbon dioxide, soaps and hand sanitizers, students learn chemistry. Students also learn how understanding chemistry can impact the environment and their health. These activities developed for informal science settings with an NIH Science Education Partnership Award, also are appropriate for middle and high school science classes and health classes as well as activity periods.
