Polylactic acid: Developing functional, sustainable materials

Laura M. Babcock, NatureWorks LLC, Minnetonka, MN

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer produced from biorenewable resources by NatureWorks LLC, a company owned by Cargill. Current markets for PLA include NatureWorks® PLA packaging and Ingeo™ fibers. Many performance attributes of PLA are the result of polymerization conditions, lactide monomer composition, and initiator level. Other performance properties require additives to effectively modify the polymer. Results describe formulation requirements and considerations that must be made when developing sustainable products with commercial performance requirements.
