Frontiers in Process Analytical Technology
Real-time monitoring of manufacturing processes have long been used by the chemical and food industry in order to ensure the quality of their products. Recently the FDA introduced a new initiative for the pharmaceutical industry described as Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and defined as "a system for designing (product development), analyzing and controlling manufacturing processes, based on timely measurements of critical quality and performance attributes of raw and in-process materials and processes with the goal of ensuring final product quality". The application of this technology includes using at-line, on-line or in-line analysis and monitoring to gain an understanding of a manufacturing process. Advances in PAT methodology and application drive production capabilities, and are critical to scale-up approaches. Similar quality ensuring initiatives have already been extensively used in other industries. This session will feature presentations on PAT approaches in various settings from pharmaceutical and chemical to consumer food producers.
