We present a method for the preparation of silica hydrogels loaded with highly luminescent CdSe quantum dots which can be used for sensing applications of biologically relevant ions and molecules. In our method quantum dots are formed inside silica hydrogels and are photoactivated with black light. The composites can then be used for sensing of Cu+2 ions and Methylamine molecules with a sensitivity on the order of 0.1 nM.
