Simply Science is a service and research based program in which high school students, in conjuction with classroom teachers from grades K-8, plan and present science lessons to the children. The program has its origins in a grant that was part of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching which I received in 1999. The program involves finding a teacher in an underfunded school who wishes to teach a lesson in his or her classroom, but lacks resources to secure equipment and supplies for the lesson. The students work with the teacher to plan all aspects of the lesson. We purchase all equipment and supplies, go to the school to present the lesson, and leave all materials with the teacher. In addition, the students prepare a pre and post test for the teacher to give, grade the test, and measure the effectiveness of the lesson using a one-sample Student t-test. Come and hear more about the program, what we have found in our research and what our students have achieved from participation in the program.
