Students often feel that their lessons do not connect with life outside of school, and that each class is unconnected to all their other classes. In an effort to combat these feelings, and to introduce students to a growing problem in society, nearly the entire student body at Sacred Heart Academy studied some aspect of osteoporosis. The chemistry students measured the amount of calcium in liquids in their diet using a calcium ion selective electrode. This project culminated in an assembly where students presented their results to the entire school community. We also conducted an outreach where middle-school students from area schools, instructed by our students, performed experiments to learn about the disease, its effects and its prevention.
