Ten years of On-Line High Resolution NMR in Refining, Petrochemical, and Food Manufacturing

Paul J. Giammatteo and John C. Edwards. Process NMR Associates, LLC, Danbury, CT

Industrial applications of both time-domain NMR and high resolution FT-NMR for process control and product quality evaluation have been ongoing for the past decade. From gasoline manufacturing to butter production, from control of polyethylene manufacturing to performing a crude oil assay, well over 110 on-line NMRs have been in manufacturing plants around the world performing diverse applications that require unique integration of engineering, chemistry, chemometrics, and advanced process control skills in order to deliver reliable, accurate, and useable real-time data and information. This talk will focus on several applications that literally convert a "routine" 60 Mhz proton spectrum into operational and process control benefits that successfully return large annual economic benefit to the user. The installations and utilization of this robust NMR technology will be discussed and examples of successful application of high resolution NMR in the petroleum and petrochemical industries will be highlighted. Future utilization of on line/ at line use of NMR for food and pharmaceutical manufacturing will also be discussed.
