Diamide macrocycles 1 and 2 have been synthesized as potential precursors to engineering polyamides. Both compounds show multiple conformations in polar aprotic solvents, but only a single conformation in nonpolar solvents. The conformers reflect restricted rotation about one of the amide bonds. Conformation analysis of both macrocycles was conducted by variable temperature NMR.
