Pendant Group Functionalization of Phenylene-vinylene Conjugated Molecules and Polymers

Jitapa Sumranjit and Paul M. Lahti. University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst, MA

Conjugated phenylene-vinylene organic oligomers and polymers have been synthesized and characterized. Variation of pendant groups effects properties of each system. Triethylammonium salt side-chain trimer and related polymers are partly water-soluble and emit blue and green fluorescence, respectively. By incorporation of pyridinium or phthalimido units, the fluorescence emission of the core can be quenched, allowing a design strategy for a “turn-on” fluorescent sensor material. An amino side-chain functionalized trimer will be described that offers a new scheme for synthesizing segmented conjugated-nonconjugated polymers, and their possible use in sensor materials.
