Mercury emission from coal fired power plant smoke stacks is often studied with an emphasis on atmospheric pollution. In contrast, our study focuses on the local environment as reflected in mercury concentrations in soil from the vicinity of the Danskammer power plant in Newburgh, New York. Soil sampling will take place at specific intervals during the year so as to delineate spatial and temporal patterns of mercury deposition. We are also interested in developing a model to study the environmental impact of mercury deposition variation under different regulatory policies.
