In the recent years our group's research has been focused on the diarylamido-based PNP pincer ligands in application to a variety of transition metal centers. Within the context of Rh(I) and Ir(I) our attention has been directed towards intramolecular C-N oxidative addition and intermolecular C-halogen oxidative addition. Both process face competition from the C-H oxidative addition pathways. The propensity to give products of C-H activation is greater for Ir than for Rh. We will discuss our understanding of the kinetics and thermodynamics of the intra- and intermolecular C-H/C-X oxidative addition. Our results are supported by multinuclear NMR solution studies and solid-state X-ray structural determinations. The unexpected benefits of the solid-state reactions will be addressed as well.
