Cosmetic Chemistry is it more an art than a science?

Chorobis Drakes, Clairol, Stamford, CT

For some people who work in the cosmetic industry especially in the colorant business see cosmetic chemistry as a perfect science rather than art. Actually its both, cosmetic chemistry is a blending of creative thinking (art side) and chemistry (scientific side) or try-chemistry. The meshing of these allows for an array of colorant shades to develop from your lightest blondes to your darkest browns and blacks. The artistic side of cosmetic chemistry deals alot with emotions while the chemistry side deals with molecules and their reactions. Emotions for consumers sway from loving a particular shade to never leaving the house because that shade wasn't what one would have expected. Chemistry comes into play when the right combination of molecules leave the hair feeling silky smooth, manageable, vibrant and shiny.
