Coaching and Mentoring Beginning Chemistry Teachers

Charles A. Di Sapio, Greenwich High School, Greenwich, CT

There is a need to assist the beginning chemistry teacher in a number of areas. For example, the mentor usually must assist the beginning teacher to explore a variety of teaching strategies that address diversity in students and their learning style. In addition, planning lessons and units of instruction as well as learning how to evaluate student work are other areas that the mentor teacher needs to assist the beginning teacher. Of course, there are other resposibilities that the mentor teacher must fulfill in order for the beginning teacher to start a successful career.
