The Division of Chemical Education (CHED) and the high school chemistry teacher

Morton Z. Hoffman, Boston University, Boston, MA

CHED is one of the 33 technical divisions within ACS; its membership of approximately 5,000 includes those who share a concern for the teaching and learning of chemistry across the educational spectrum. Its governance structure includes an Executive Committee with 13 elected members plus the Editor of the Journal of Chemical Education and the Director of the ACS Examinations Institute, and a wide variety of committees, including the High School Chemistry Committee. CHED organizes programs for high school chemistry teachers at ACS national meetings and the Biennial Conferences on Chemical Education, and facilitates the organization of such programs at ACS regional meetings. CHED offers affiliate membership at a nominal fee to those who are not ACS members. Through the Chemistry Teacher Connection program, high school teachers can join CHED as affiliate members and have electronic access to materials that are relevant to them from the Journal for direct and immediate use in their classroom. In addition, CHED has contributed $100,000 in matching funds to the endowment to support the presentation of awards that recognize excellence among high school teachers in all ten ACS regions in perpetuity. High school chemistry teachers are welcome to be an active part of the CHED family.
