Equilibrium Calculations without Any Math

Robert D. Allendoerfer, University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Buffalo, NY

A new version of the computer program Equilibrium Calculator (previous versions were published by JCE Software) will be presented. This new version of the program can now handle up to three simultaneous equilibria so it can handle virtually any equilibrium problem covered in General Chemistry or Introductory Analytical courses. There is no longer any need to avoid discussion of industrially important gas phase reactions like:

N2 + 3 H2 <==> 2 NH3 or CO + 1/2 02 <==> CO2

because the students can't do the math. Industrially and biologically important acids and bases like H2SO4, H3PO4, phosphate buffers, etc. can all be treated in the same discussion as their mono-protic brethren. Complex ion equilibria and solubility product calculations can also be handled by the program. All this without any discussion of approximation methods like the 5% rule or mathematical solution methods for the quadratic or cubic equations. This leaves the instructor or textbook author free to emphasize the chemical reactions involved and minimize the mathematical complexity.

The program runs on any computer running Microsoft Windows with Windows 98 or newer installed. It does require the Microsoft .Net Framework be installed on the computer before installing the program. A copy of the program can be requested by e-mailing cheallen@buffalo.edu.
