Characterization and Photoelectrochemistry of Porous Colloidal p-Cu2O Films

Jennifer M. Bell, Whitney A. Thurber, and Akiko Fillinger. Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY

Porous p-Cu2O films were prepared on indium tin oxide coated glass from a colloidal Cu2O-methanol solution.  Annealing process was problematic to maintain the chemical identity of Cu2O.  The photon to current conversion efficiency of the colloidal Cu2O film  in a 0.5 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution was approximately twice more than electrodeposited Cu2O films.  The enhancement is attributed to the increased interfacial area between the film and the solution, which is due to the porous nature of the colloidal Cu2O film.  The colloidal Cu2O film was stable in the aqueous solution under illumination with a 100 W tungsten lamp for 2 hrs.
