Introducing Nano and Materials Chemistry Experiments into Descriptive Inorganic Chemistry

Karen S. Brewer, Hamilton College, Clinton, NY

At Hamilton College, we have introduced materials chemistry experiments as individual project labs to the lab program for Inorganic & Materials Chemistry 265, a sophomore-level undergraduate inorganic course. The projects, many of which use UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and powder x-ray diffraction to analyze the materials, were completed over three weeks at the end of the semester following experiments earlier in the semester that focused on those new techniques. At the conclusion of their project, each student prepared a poster describing their project and shared their results with their classmates. The entire lab program, with its emphasis on nanochemistry and materials chemistry, will be outlined with particular attention to the final individual projects ranging in topics from the synthesis and characterization of cadmium nanoparticles to magnetic garnets.
