Open access: changing the equation for scholars and librarians

A. Ben Wagner, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY

Library collection budgets have reached the breaking point. Scholars need to publish in prestigious journals; but they also want their articles to be widely read and cited. Journal price increases threaten that availability. This paper discusses the growing dialog between librarians and scientists about journal affordability and open access. Particular attention will be paid to recent studies indicating that open access articles are cited 25%-400% more than subscription-based articles, depending on the discipline. Learn what specific actions scholars can take today to promote the availability and visibility of their publications.
