The Community Reacts

Tom Wilber, Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin, Vestal, NY

The Endicott community reaction to news that high concentrations of TCE vapor had been found in their homes was tinged with anger, frustration, fear, and uncertainty. Hundreds of people attended sometimes raucous meetings with industry, government and legal representatives to voice concerns. From this wellspring came two community action groups, CARE and RAGE, that channeled and expressed concerns to news media, politicians, and state regulatory agencies. This talk will describe the initial community reaction to the Endicott TCE plume and trace the transformation of this reaction into a collective community voice.
