A guided inquiry learning method has been designed for a junior/senior seminar course to assist students in their preparation for senior comprehensive exams. Papers from the primary literature are selected as a basis for the exercise and questions are formulated to probe the salient review topics contained in the papers. Students prepare an oral persentation which summarizes the key points of the research article and reviews any necessary background material. A student-moderated class discussion of the guideline questions is then undertaken. In addition to being a successful review tool, this approach enhances oral communicaiton skills, sharpens students' abilities to comprehend the primary literature, and promotes peer-centered learning.
