Opportunities Offered by Green Processing

Roshan Jachuck, Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY

This presentation will highlight the need to develop reactor modules capable of delivering field effects such as microwave, UV, plasma, magnetic field and ultrasonic to chemical reactants for energy efficient synthesis of green materials. In order to develop such systems it is essential to use the concepts of green processing which aims to enhance transport rates and emphasizes on continuous rather than batch mode of operation, promotes the use of benign solvents and eliminates waste. Results on laboratory to pilot scale studies performed at Clarkson University for continuous production of biodiesel, ethanol and other chemicals using compact energy efficient reactors will be presented.
