Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has had a successful Lactation Support Program (LSP) for 8 years. Originally established as a pilot program in 1998, the LSP has continued to this day, now managed by Human Resources' Benefits staff. This paper will discuss research that has shown that companies that provide a breastfeeding-friendly workplace have less employee absenteeism due to the health benefits of breastfeeding, and increased employee productivity, loyalty, and morale. And when women who return to work after maternity leave are encouraged to continue breastfeeding their babies through an employer-sponsored lactation program, the company gains a number of positive, bottom line benefits. Experiences at PNNL will be highlighted, including the evolution of our LSP, lessons-learned, and personal experiences.
