Rapid synthesis and application of highly functionalized biphenyls via [4+2] cycloaddition

Michael R. Naffziger, Bradley O. Ashburn, and Rich G. Carter. Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR

While biphenyl motifs have garnered considerable interest in catalysis and total synthesis, conventional coupling methods are incompatible with certain desirable functionalities.  Herein, the rapid construction of halogenated biaryls 4 and 5 via a Diels-Alder cycloaddition will be disclosed.  Subsequent utilization of these biaryl templates 4 and 5 in Suzuki couplings and other conversions will also be discussed.
