Synthesis of the First Acceptor PCP “Pincer” Ligands

Ade K. Lau and Dean M. Roddick. University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY

The synthesis of new PCP (“pincer”) polydentate acceptor ligands is described. The versatile chlorophosphine precursor 1,3-C6H4(CH2PCl2)2, was prepared and converted to 1,3-C6H4(CH2P(OPh)2)2, and then perfluoroalkylated by Ruppert's reagent, CF3SiMe3, to form perfluoromethyl PCP phosphine, 1,3-C6H4(CH2P(CF3)2)2. An initial survey of platinum and iridium coordination chemistry for this new PCP ligand will be presented.
