Polymeric helicenes have been prepared by the ring-closing metathesis (RCM) of poly(divinyl-
ortho-phenylene). The key monomer was prepared in six steps and its Suzuki polymerization gave polymers containing ca. 30 monomers. Subsequent RCM afforded the polymeric helicene.
Molecular dynamics calculations suggest that substituted helicenes may serve as nanoactuators or artificial muscles. Synthetic progress towards substituted polymeric helicenes will be presented.
