Performance assessment of photovoltaic installations

John C. Sagebiel, University of Nevada, Reno, Reno, NV

Photovoltaic installations can vary significantly in their performance. Factors such as orientation and angle of installation can have impacts. Total solar radiation has a significant impact on energy production from a photovoltaic array as does temperature. A final performance parameter is financial; as energy prices continue to rise, the return-on-investment periods for photovoltaic installations continues to fall. This talk will present quantitative performance parameters for a 4.4 kW photovoltaic array that went on-line in September 2005. Daily output, along with comparisons to a net radiometer will be presented along with performance comparing orientation, solar tracking, and comparison with modeled output.
