We report a new route for the preparation of highly conjugated, defect-free MEH-PPV composites for use in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDS) with improved optical properties. Synthesis of the conducting polymers via Horner-Emmons coupling was performed in various solvents that allow in situ loading of the dopants. The polymers were characterized by cyclic voltammetry and by UV-vis electroluminescence, and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The dopants included 50 nm Au nanoshells and SWNTs in quantities of 0.01 to 2.00% by mass. Both types of doped composites exhibited concentration-dependent responses with respect to emission intensity, turn-on voltage, and device lifetime.
