Spectroscopy & Kinetics: An Inquiry-Based Determination of Reaction Order

Cassandra J. Warren, Edward Bain, and Timothy L. Sorey. Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA

A research topic will be presented that includes development, implementation, and assessment of chemical kinetic systems that are viable for computer-based spectroscopic analysis in student inquiry-based general chemistry laboratories. Students explore the crystal violet/sodium hydroxide and thiolsulfate/hydronium chemical kinetic systems via colorimetric and turbidimetric analyses, respectively. These traditional experiments can be completed within a single lab period implementing MicroLAB's 10-Color Colorimeter and Kinetics Software. Analysis of assessment data suggests that this technologically enhanced approach increased students' understanding of kinetics and reaction orders.
