Heme model compounds, specifically, the heme d1 center, 2,12-(dioxooctaethylbacteriochlorinato)iron(III) chloride 1 and 2,7-(dioxooctaethyl isobacteriochlorinato)iron(III) chloride 2 were synthesized. 1H NMR and EPR techniques were used to investigate the electron spin distribution and electronic ground state. The bis(imidazole-d4) complexes of 1 and 2 were studied and compared to those of the bis(imidazole) complex of (octaethylbacteriochlorinato)iron(III).
