One-Pot Synthesis of Macromonomers Utilizing ATRP and "Click" Chemistry

Zachary J. Hunt and Stephen H. Foulger. Clemson University, Anderson, SC

Functionalized macromonomers were synthesized utilizing, in succession, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), azide functionalization of the polymer's terminal bromine, and finally “click” reaction of the azide, with an alkyne functionality, to generate a functionalized macomonomer. Normal processing of said polymers tends to be rather time consuming in regards to cleaning and execution of each individual reaction in the multi-step process. The goal was to achieve the same results as a stepwise process, while carrying out the multi-step reaction in one pot. The benefits would be a reduction in working time, as well as a decrease in waste as a result of the various cleaning steps. Ideally the system will show adaptability to a wide range of monomers allowing for post polymerization modification in an efficient manner.
