Brooke Francis, Sara Charlton, and Joseph Wirgau. Radford University, Radford, VA
In 2005, Radford University finished construction of a surface-flow wetland for the treatment of urban run-off before its introduction into the New River. The water entering the wetlands from surrounding parking lots was found to contain petroleum-based organic compounds and zinc. The effectiveness of the wetland has been monitored for the past three years and the summary of the findings will be presented. Chemical analysis of the water and soil of the wetland includes lead, copper, zinc, iron, cadmium, nitrates, phosphorus, acidity, salinity, and organic compound content. Overall, the water entering the New River contains lower levels of organic material, zinc, and phosphorus then the run-off entering the wetland. All other compounds examined were at safe levels and appear unaffected by the construction of the wetland.
