Organometallic Capsule and Container Assemblies

Jerry L. Atwood, University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia, MO

We have previously reported on strategies for the complexation of anions and neutral molecules by cavity-containing molecules. These have included metallated calixarenes, metallated cyclotriveratrylenes, and cation binding molecules. On a parallel track to this guest-binding work, we have pursued the self assembly of very large supramolecular architectures. These have included capsular assemblies based on both hydrogen bonding and metal coordination bonding. In this presentation, we reveal our initial efforts to wed these two concepts together. The focus will be on the encapsulation of guests by large supramolecular organometallic assemblies.
