This tutorial will overview the fundamental optical properties of materials and how structure affects performance with a focus on polymeric systems. After an introduction to basic optical phenomena and properties, the talk will turn to current and future needs relative to passive and active optical applications. Specific research efforts based on hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon-based polymer will be used to exemplify the topics.
