Upgrading Curricula in Organic Chemistry at South Carolina State University

Nasrollah Hamidi and Michael G. Coleman. South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, SC

The Organic Chemistry Courses were upgraded by using power point presentation of material and lab simulation of the subject that were thought. The laboratory experiments were upgraded by introducing new analytical instrumentation into experimental sessions. Gas chromatographer, UV-visible, FT-IR, automatic and digital refractometers, automatic melting point, and polarimeters were introduced into lab experiments. New experimental procedures were developed to replace older course syllabus. The students' general responses were encouraging since its inception. Future work will include refining the relationship between laboratory experiments and lecture material to address the needs of the ever advancing world of science, engineering and technology.
