Polymer electrolytes based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) have been studied as electrolytes in lithium ion batteries and were found to have both low ambient ionic conductivities and low lithium transference numbers. Addition of organic carbonates plasticizers, like: EC, DEC, PC, DMC or their mixtures, may enhance the ionic conductivity but their high vapor pressure and high volatility introduce some safety concerns. As a result, gel electrolytes, and ionic liquids (ILs) are being widely investigated for use in lithium batteries as alternatives to both SPEs and traditional liquid electrolytes based on mixtures of carbonates. Our work is describing both the preparation and physical characterization of a series of ionic liquids using low molecular weight oligomers of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), Mw = 350-2000 Da, both as a scaffold and a plasticizing agent in the preparation of two series of ionic melts based either on lithium fluorosulfonate or lithium fluorosulfonimide as shown in Scheme 1.
