Synthesis and Biological Activity of Organometallic Ruthenium Complexes

Organometallic ruthenium compounds of the type [(h6-arene)RuCl(L-L)]X (arene = benzene or p-cymene; X = Cl- or PF6-) have been synthesized according to the following typical reaction:

In the complexes, L-L is a bidentate diimine ligand (based on 1,10-phenanthroline) or a thiosemicarbazone. The characterization of the ligands and complexes were done by elemental analysis, mass and NMR spectrometries, as well as UV-VIS and infrared spectrophotometry. The biological activity of the metal complexes was evaluated against four common strains of bacteria namely E. coli, P. vulgaris, and B. subtilis.
