In 1933 Georges Ranque introduced the vortex tube. A vortex tube is an extraordinary yet simple device. It has no moving parts and consists simply of a tube with an aperture at one end and an adjustable constriction at the other. Compressed gas is tangentially allowed into the tube resulting in hot air coming out one end and cold air coming out the other end of the tube. To this day, even the fundamental physics of this device are not well understood. Even though vortex tubes are available commercially, the objective of this project is to build a home-made vortex tube of dimensions consistent with current theory using parts mainly from a local hardware store. Experimental properties of the tube will then be compared with theory. The effect of different gases will be also be investigated.
