A brief history and overview of the science laboratory experience is presented.  The current laboratory science requirements for New Mexico high schools and the New Mexico Common Transfer Curriculum is reviewed.  Students at New Mexico State University--Carlsbad, a community college branch of NMSU, who were currently enrolled in at least one science course with a required laboratory component, were surveyed concerning the actual number of science laboratory classes they had experienced prior to their current experience.  They were then questioned concerning how their current laboratory class related to the corresponding lecture section and as to the environment in which the laboratory was held.  In addition, students were allowed to make open comments about their laboratory experiences.
