13 Investigation of the Promoter Effects On TiO2 Supported Pd Catalysts for the Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene in the Presence of Ethylene

Ag, Pt and Ga were investigated as promoters of TiO2 supported Pd catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene in ethylene.  Differential scanning calorimeter in hydrogen atmosphere (H2-DSC) was used as the main technique to gauge the interaction between Pd precursor and promoter on TiO2 surface.  The results indicate that the strength of the interaction between Pd precursor and different promoters is as the following order: Ag > Ga > Pt.  The interaction depends on the loading of the promoter and the precursor used.  Further investigation will be to relate the interaction between Pd precursor and different promoters to the selective hydrogenation reaction including acetylene conversion activity, ethylene selectivity, and the yield of ethylene at temperatures from 25°C to 65°C.
