Ligands Derived from Benzo[b]-1,8-naphthyridine and their Ru (II) Chemistry
Through a series of reactions starting with acetanilide, 2-aminoquinoline-3-carbaldehyde was prepared. The 2-aminoquinoline-3-carbaldehyde underwent a Friedländer condensation with acetylpyridine, acetylpyrazine, and 4-tert-butyl-2,6-(diacetyl)pyridine to produce the benzo[b]-1,8-naphthyridine derivatives 1-3, respectively. The properties of these ligands were examined through UV-Vis absorption and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. These bidentate and tridentate ligands reacted with [Ru(phen)2Cl2] and [Ru(tpy)Cl3], respectively to provide the corresponding Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes. The properties of these complexes are reported.
