19 Manganese Catalyst for Sn-Sn Bond Formation

Methylmanganese pentacarbonyl has been used to investigate the ability of organometallic transition metal complexes (of the cheaper variety) to act as catalysts for Group 14 chemical transformations. We have accomplished the photochemical dehydrocoupling of the monomer R2SnH2 to form HR2SnSnR2H using MeMn(CO)5 as the catalyst. During the reaction process, followed by 119Sn NMR, it was clear that the inital methylmanganese catalyst was consumed and that R2Sn(H)Mn(CO)5 was formed. Full details including crystal structures of the Sn-Mn intermediates will be presented.
